Rugby,Borneo 7-KOREANS GO DOWN TO CHINA

KOTA KINABALU, 24 September: China pulled off an early upset when they defeated Korea 36-7 in the HSBC Asian Rugby Sevens Series (men's) that began today on the second day of the Borneo Sevens Series tournament held at Stadium Likas in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah.

Korea, who lead the point rankings in the HSBC Asian Rugby Sevens Series, were defeated by their fifth ranked opponents after only managing to score a solitary try and conversion in the 6th minute. China, meanwhile, ran riot with six tries and three conversions.

Home team Malaysia began the day well when they beat Brunei 50-0 and Chinese Taipei 17-0, but could not sustain their streak in their third game and fell to defending champions, Hong Kong 35-5.

“I am not too happy with the way they played today. The boys made many unnecessary mistakes, which is a bit shameful for me as I know we could have played better," said Malaysian coach Wan Ibrahim.

Coach Wan Ibrahim added, “We are facing Philippines, which is a good team, in our first match tomorrow so we have to focus and be confident going into the match.”

Hong Kong coach, Dai Rees said, “We know the Malaysian team very well and we knew that if we slack off in concentration, Malaysia can beat us. So we tried a different tactic by changing the coaching and by using different strategies.”

In the Asia Pacific Womens Sevens, our Malaysian women lost both of their matches. In their first match against Pool A leaders, Samoa, Malaysia fell 0-46 and in their second match against Cook Islands, they lost 0-34.

Samoa lost to Papua New Guinea 17-22 in the semifinals while China beat Hong Kong 22-12 in the other semis. Papua New Guinea, who placed second last year will be playing China in tomorrow’s finals.
