KOTA KINABALU, September 25: Japan were crowned champions of the HSBC Asian Rugby Sevens Series in the last day of the Borneo Sevens rugby tournament held at Stadium Likas, Kota Kinabalu, Sabah.
After losing in the finals against Hong Kong last year, Japan achieved their target of bettering their last year’s accomplishment with a 46 – 0 win over Philippines in the final. Japan will now lead the Asian challenge in the HSBC Hong Kong Sevens, scheduled for 23rd-25th March 2012.
Hong Kong’s title defense suffered a blow as they were ousted by runners-up Philippines in the Cup semifinal and ended up finishing third after beating Chinese Taipei 35-5.
China, who finished fifth in the Shanghai Seven’s bettered their standings by a rung after finishing fourth. The biggest upset came from first leg ranking leaders, Korea, as they finished a meager 8th in the tournament.
Meanwhile, Malaysia failed in their bid of qualifying to the 2012 HSBC Hong Kong World Cup Sevens Series after a 28-14 defeat to Philippines in the quarter-finals.
The homesters lost 19-0 in the Plate’s final to Chinese Taipei to repeat their sixth place finish in the Shanghai leg of the HSBC Asian Rugby Sevens Series, last August.
In the Asia Pacific Womens Sevens, last year’s finalist Papua New Guinea bettered their performance this year by beating China 24-10 China in final, while, the Malaysian women lost 42-0 to Tonga in the plate finals.
